Do You Know the Beast’s Five Secrets for Success?

by Ed Martin on November 4, 2009

I went  to hear composer Philip Glass speak collaboration and creativity expecting to learn about how he composes music for film. Instead I learned about some some important secrets for success in business. Here’s what is even wackier, the lessons come from the French surrealist Jean Cocteau’s  movie La Belle et le Bete , better as the Disney version Beauty and the Beast.

In the movie the Beast’s powers come from five things: a rose, his mirror, the white horse, the key, and his glove. Glass says these stand for beauty,  path,  strength, method,  and pride.  I don’t know much about what Cocteau was thinking, but I do know that these are five things you need to be successful.

The Rose is Beauty
You have to love what you are doing. Be passionate about what you want to achieve and how you go about doing it.

The Mirror is the Path
The path is your plan. You need to have one and stick to it. People who say that it is all about the journey and not the destination are usually lost. If you have a goal for success, you have to plan how to reach it.

The Horse is Strength
You need strength and stamina to become successful and then to keep that success going.  It’s hard work, but it can be fun, too. Really it has to be enjoyable on some level doesn’t it?  It feels great to go out and flex your business muscles. It also takes practice and work to keep those success building skills in top shape, but you get a big payback for the effort.

The Key is Method
If your plan tells you where to go and when to get there, then the method is  what you do and how you execute your plans for success.  This is where all that theoretical stuff becomes practical. You’ve got to produce, and this is where all that work and study you put into developing skills and learning new methods pays off.

The Glove is Pride
Take pride in what you do. You are trying to build something. Be proud of the results you achieve. It makes going to work a lot easier.

One other secret here is to just keep your eyes and ears open. You never know when you’ll find something you can put to use or where it will come. I was expecting some music talk, I got that but also some great ideas for success. Who’da thunk it?

If you’ve never heard any of Philip Glass’s music , give it shot. You might like it.
